Significant Cost Saving Measures Planned for 2017 America´s Cup

The competitors and organizers of the 2017 America’s Cup are planning to implement a series of rule changes to dramatically reduce team operational costs, primarily by racing in a smaller boat. The new America’s Cup Class under consideration is a wing-sailed, foiling catamaran between 45 and 50 feet. The boat would make its debut for racing in Bermuda in 2017.

Malta Flag becomes the 6th Largest Merchant Ship Register in the World

Transport Malta, the authority responsible for the Malta Ship Register, reports a strong and positive performance for 2014. According to the latest official statistics, Malta has now become the 6th largest Ship Register worldwide whilst further consolidating its position as the largest Register in Europe. In 2013, Malta ranked in the seventh place. In fact, as at end of the year, the Maltese Register of Shipping registered an increase of almost 6.5 million gross tonnage representing a growth rate of 12.5% over the previous year, which had also reported record figures.

Glamour Day on Grand Harbour

Yesterday Malta laid on possibly the best ever beginning to a RC44 Championship Tour. The RC44 Valletta Cup kicked off on Malta's Grand Harbour with a day of match racing within one of sailing's most spectacular settings: The 500 year old Maltese capital of Valletta on one side and the city's giant forts on the other. Within the confines of the bustling natural harbour, racing started for the eleven RC44s at 11:30 local time, the wind fortunately blowing from the southeast enabling the race committee to set the weather mark deep within the harbour

Scientists find evidence of great tsunami in Malta

Scientists at the University of Portsmouth have found geological evidence that historic tsunami waves have swept over Malta’s north east coasts up to 20 metres above sea level in some places. The Portsmouth scientists, led by Dr Malcolm Bray, have spent three years examining the landforms on the north-eastern Maltese coast with the support of colleagues from the Department of Geography at University of Malta.
